We tested 8 VPNs from South African connections in April–May 2026: NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, CyberGhost, ProtonVPN, IPVanish, Private Internet Access, and Mullvad. We ran speed tests on Vodacom fibre and MTN LTE, checked for DNS leaks, tested streaming compatibility, and evaluated privacy policies.
Four of them are genuinely worth recommending. Here's our honest assessment.
Testing methodology
All speed tests were run between 19:00–21:00 SAST (peak hours). Each VPN was tested on the same Vodacom fibre line (100 Mbps baseline). Latency was tested to Johannesburg, London, and New York servers.
Do I Need a VPN in South Africa?
Short answer: yes, especially if you use public Wi-Fi or care about your privacy. Here's why VPNs matter specifically in SA:
- Public Wi-Fi is everywhere — and dangerous. Malls, coffee shops, universities, airports. Without a VPN, anyone on the same network can potentially intercept your traffic.
- RICA surveillance. South Africa's Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act (RICA) allows ISPs to store and disclose your browsing data under certain conditions. A VPN significantly limits what they can see.
- ISP throttling. Some SA ISPs throttle video streaming during peak hours. A VPN can bypass this by hiding what type of traffic you're sending.
- Geo-restricted content. Access overseas Netflix libraries, BBC iPlayer, and other geo-blocked content.
1. NordVPN — Best Overall for SA (9.4/10)
The best all-round VPN for SA users. Johannesburg servers, audited no-logs, Threat Protection.
Why it's our top pick: NordVPN ticks every box for South African users — it has local servers in Johannesburg, a no-logs policy audited by both PwC and Deloitte, an excellent Threat Protection feature that blocks phishing URLs (highly relevant given SA's phishing problem), and the best price-to-performance ratio of anything we tested.
SA speed test: 89/98 Mbps download on JHB server (9% reduction). Barely noticeable.
What we didn't love: The best price requires a 2-year upfront commitment. The monthly plan is R249/month — expensive.
2. ExpressVPN — Fastest VPN from SA (9.1/10)
The fastest VPN we tested from SA. Premium price, premium performance.
Why it's worth considering: ExpressVPN was the fastest in our tests by a meaningful margin. It uses its proprietary Lightway protocol which is genuinely faster than WireGuard in some SA scenarios. The app is polished, the 24/7 live chat support is genuinely helpful, and it unblocks more streaming services than any competitor we tested.
SA speed test: 92/98 Mbps download on JHB server (6% reduction). Fastest tested.
What we didn't love: It's about twice the price of NordVPN. Hard to justify unless speed is your absolute priority.
3. Surfshark — Best Budget VPN for SA (8.6/10)
Unlimited simultaneous devices. Excellent for SA families or home offices.
Why it stands out: Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous device connections on a single subscription. If you have a family or multiple devices, this is massive. The price is the lowest of our top picks. It has SA servers and good privacy credentials.
SA speed test: 82/98 Mbps download on JHB server (16% reduction). Good, but noticeably slower than Nord and Express.
What we didn't love: Slower speeds than our top picks. The CleanWeb ad blocker is less effective than NordVPN's Threat Protection against phishing.
4. CyberGhost — Best for Streaming SA (8.2/10)
Dedicated streaming servers make it the easiest for unblocking content.
Why it stands out: CyberGhost has a unique feature — dedicated streaming servers optimised for specific services (Netflix US, BBC iPlayer, DSTV, etc.). It's the easiest VPN for non-technical SA users who just want to watch content. It also has the cheapest price on our list.
What we didn't love: Its privacy credentials are weaker than the top 3 — no independent audit of its no-logs policy. Privacy-focused SA users should go with NordVPN instead.

What to Look for in a VPN for South Africa

- Audited no-logs policy: Don't trust "we don't log" without an independent audit to prove it.
- Works on SA networks: Some VPNs struggle with specific ISP configurations. All our top picks have been tested on Vodacom, MTN and Telkom.
- SA payment method: Visa/Mastercard support is essential. All our top picks accept SA bank cards.

Frequently Asked Questions
NordVPN is our top recommendation. It has Johannesburg servers, an audited no-logs policy, excellent speed, and is the best value for money at $3.39/month on the 2-year plan. If speed is your absolute priority, ExpressVPN is slightly faster. If budget is the priority, Surfshark gives you unlimited devices at a lower price.
ProtonVPN's free tier is the only genuinely trustworthy free VPN. It has no data limits, a real no-logs policy, and is open-source. The downside: the free tier doesn't have SA servers, so you'll be connected internationally with higher latency. For most SA users, the paid tier of NordVPN or Surfshark is worth the cost.
On local SA servers, the best VPNs cause only 6–16% speed reduction — barely noticeable in everyday use. International servers cause more significant slowdown (40–70%) because your traffic physically has to travel further. For SA browsing and streaming, always use the Johannesburg server.
Yes. All VPNs on this list have Android and iOS apps. They work on mobile data (Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, Cell C) and Wi-Fi. NordVPN even has a dedicated "threat protection lite" for mobile that works without being connected to a VPN server.
No. SIM swap fraud targets your mobile number at the network provider level — a VPN can't protect against that. For SIM swap protection, contact your network provider and ask them to add a SIM swap PIN to your account. See our SA threats guide for more details.
